Benefiting: Veterans of Foreign Wars

Demarcating territories and the desire to posses physical arena while asserting dominion over what is, or has been, through force or coercion seems unchangeably hardwired to animal actions on every level. From neighbors bickering over a bush that needs to be trimmed to someone’s dog encroaching on another’s lands. To global wars over invisible lines and political uprisings rejecting authoritarian rule. One theme is consistent, the desire to posses, assert influence upon, or control physical dominion and that capitol material which lies within it.

The second exhibition in the PURE LUCK Charity Series brings together two artists that survey spacial awareness and literally landscape the territory provided to them in the form of their material area. John Plunkett, veteran painter, takes a more traditional approach using paper, pencil, charcoal, paint, pastels and color. While newcomer Twyla Feinbloom manipulates leather and wood in a manner that resonates more with the current state of human interaction with nature.

Landscaping territories poses questions about animal instinct and how it forces us to act as we do. Coinciding with Armed Forces Day, this fundraiser for Veteran’s of Foreign Wars (VFW) poses the question, will humans continue to follow animal instinct or as a self aware conscious beings become one to their own rather than a servant to unconscious survival instincts.

John Plunkett - A Vietnam War veteran, drafted at 19, John Plunkett returned to the Northeast coast during the “Summer of Love 1969.” Since receiving his M.F.A. Fine Arts in 1980 from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) John Plunkett’s drawings and paintings have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums around the world.

Her previous formal training includes: Bill T Jones Dance Company, New York City Ballet and Boston Ballet. She has shown artwork and performed at The New Museum, X-Initiative, Exit Art, P.S.1/MoMA, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire and Musée Ariana.

BRETT CASPER

Brett Casper’s images develop the concept “compulsive beauty” in contemporary context, fusing both the surreal and real, perceived and experienced into images that powerfully render the potentiality of the situation.

Green SpAces creates stronger, healthier, environmentally responsible, self sustaining, homes and communities. By improving air quality, reducing water run off, creating energy, neutralizing our carbon imprint and growing food naturally in a sustainable low impact manner.

PURE LUCK wants to build an alternative energy rooftop CSA greenhouse in Brooklyn. Our first location has been approved and sits just 7 blocks away from the Brooklyn Museum!

What is a community rooftop, alternative energy greenhouse? Basically, it is a greenhouse on a roof that acts as a farm share feeding around 200 - 250 people. There are no petroleum based fertilizers and no trucking the produce from out of town, or any gasoline or oil usage at all. The system uses as little as 1/20th the water as conventional farming and a solid portion of that will be collected from rain water. Independent, self sustaining, closed system growing and harvesting organic produce, this is the future of urban farming.

Green SpAces is a CSA (community supported agriculture) of sorts where members could pick their produce directly from the vine. But more than just a greenhouse this is a completely modular, organic, hydroponic clubhouse showroom that incorporates modern architecture and the idea of a “biosphere” with the possibilities of home application. Members would have access to not only everything from lemon trees, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuces, kale and herbs to mushrooms, flowers and a variety of other plants. The space will also have a cafe, lounge, kitchen, dinning area, compost facilities for production of biogas, solar panels and a biogas scrubber (for biogas vehicles).

THE OPPORTUNITY
By the year 2050, nearly 80% of the earth’s population will reside in urban centers. Applying the most conservative estimates to current demographic trends, the human population will increase by about 3 billion people during the interim. An estimated 109 hectares of new land (about 20% more land than is represented by the country of Brazil) will be needed to grow enough food to feed them, if traditional farming practices continue as they are practiced today.

At present, throughout the world, over 80% of the land that is suitable for raising crops is in use (sources: FAO and NASA). Historically, some 15% of that has been laid waste by poor management practices. Combine these facts with a fragile eco-system, increasingly extreme weather pattens, politics and rising oil prices and it forces us to rethink the future of food and energy production. PURE LUCK see’s an opportunity to change the fundamental infrastructures of society while improving the quality of life at the same time. We will streamline infrastructures and create new economies within larger population densities.

“Urban agriculture is a growth industry,” says Dickson Despommier, a Columbia University microbiology professor and author of The Vertical Farm. His book touts a vision for commercial-scale agriculture in high-tech greenhouses as high as 30 stories tall, with the footprint of an entire city block.

Today, it takes a landmass almost as big as Ohio to feed the population of NYC. On average between one and two billion dollars of produce is trucked into NYC each year. Vertically integrated carbon neutral urban farming is the future of food production.

PURE LUCK awarded Beau Rhee a performance space. The piece was held in May 2010 and the realized art exhibited in July, 2010 at PURE LUCK located at 2 Great Jones Street in Noho, NYC. She understands the influence art can wield over society and she chooses to use it as a medium to stimulate productive dialogue. Bravo!

Pure White
by Beau Rhee

THE ARTWORK
Pure White is an installation scripted within a conceptual ballet and was conceived by Beau Rhee over the course of three years time. This large-scale piece combines thirty minutes of choreography, snow machines, polyurethane snow, a cigarette and a ballet barre with a classically trained dancer in a dress of silk and feathers. The artwork cycles and re-cycles through its own time and material.

With potentially political undertones, this thoughtfully scripted piece questions the boundaries of purity and excess within the human cycle. The balletic movements explore the tension between classical beauty and the mechanistic all the while subtly reflecting on the current status quo. Finally, the installation re-enforces these main ideas with its rhythmic sounds and actual mechanism, which demands constant refilling upon depletion of petrolium snow product. The snow falls into a sculptural polyurethane pile that remains a constantly shifting geography of the dancers’ movement. The installation creates a living mechanical environment within itself.

THE PERFORMANCE
White snow gently floats to the ground over a wooden ballet barre. The peaceful sound of it falling combines with echoes of the dancer’s sweeping feet reverberated from a past performance. At regular intervals, a dancer emerges, smoking her cigarette and stretching in the steady snowfall. This ballerina is costumed, powdered, masked and feathered white. She unfurls her body, rehearses, repeats and develops her movements. The viewer shares with her the process of entropy and expenditure. They feel the exhaustion with what is past and are ready to move on to what is new. The performance ends, only to resume again in persistence.

The artist believes that true beauty has the power for criticality and to stimulate transformation. This is achieved in part through the emotional state pure beauty evokes when experienced. A theatrical inspiration injection into the stream of consciousness, this piece is certainly in part a reaction to the catastrophes of our society. Feeding the machine with more of the same is no longer acceptable.

As the Art season winds down with the Summer, PURE LUCK brings a motto to carry with you during your travels. GRITTY, PRETTY, READY, STEADY is a collection of recent works by Beau Rhee. This special exhibition will be on view for a short period of time at PURE LUCK in our new location at 2 Great Jones Street.

Ms. Rhee’s motto consistently runs through her artworks. Her performance pieces are powerfully beautiful, art historically informed and technically equipped masterpieces. Her concept of the New Baroque, which is a development of the idea of “the fold” (Deleuze), purity and the infinite/excess, runs mysteriously through her most recent performance works. Ms. Rhee conveys gestures through repetition and accumulation, thus creating a static art object that modulates through time.

While ideas of rhythm, beauty and mystery hide in gritty textures on paper and behind curtains, there runs a deeper meaning to all this. Cultural staticity has amassed into a charge, building and building. Eventually the charge archs or pops and releases all of its potential energy. Beau Rhee’s works are just that. A positive charge that eliminates the excess and fires your neurons into a new mindset.

Drawing from her passion for performance, dance and visual art she creates a unique oeuvre that explores human movement, gesture, the intangible and the surreal. She received her B.A. Dance & B.A. Art History from Columbia University (cum laude). In 2008 she had the honor of training with the Bill T Jones Dance Company by invitation.

Her previous formal training includes: New York City Ballet, Boston Ballet, and A-Soon Dance Company in Seoul Korea. She has shown artwork and performed at The New Museum, X-Initiative, Exit Art, P.S.1/MoMA. Most recently Beau had been interviewed by Art International Radio (AIR), a new internet radio station & cultural archive directed by the founder of P.S.1. There she has been invited to rehearse and create new works.
